Siamese and Beta Fish Ich

Ich is a very common condition which occurs in many species of fish. Due to the nature of Ich it is more dominant in tropical fish species such as Siamese and beta fish.

Ich is also known by its scientific name Ichthyophthirius.

What is Ich?

Ich is a ciliated parasite which has a long and somewhat complex life cycle.

What does that mean?

It means if not treated properly Ich can cause your Siamese or beta fish to become sick or even death.

The Ich parasite feeds on your beta fishes dead skin cells and body fluids. If untreated, you're Siamese or beta fish may appear to have white spots on their skin. This is one of the first signs of Ich.

Ich is often transferred to a new aquarium from another source. Have you introduced anything new to your aquarium lately? If you have acquired a new fish or plant without allowing for the recommended quarantine period you could have found your source.

Another major cause of Ich is poor water or aquarium conditions. Make sure your water temp is high enough, ensure the beta tank of Siamese tank is cleaned at least once a week.

I think my Siamese fish or beta fish has Ich, ?

First raise the water temperature. Ensure the temperature stays above 68F.

Second, give your beta fish tank or Siamese fish tank a good cleaning.

Third, medicate the tank and the Siamese or beta fish for 10-14 days or as recommended with proper Ich treatment.

Fourth, after treatment clean your beta fish or Siamese fish tank again.

After this you should once again have a healthy and lively Siamese fish or beta fish.
