Beta Fish Basics
Beta Fish, also known as Siamese Fighting Fish are originally from the South Eastern parts of Asia . With many varieties of fins and colors betas have become one of the world's most popular aquarium fish.
Since Beta Fish are known for their fighting spirit it is important to have only one male Beta Fish per tank. Females are usually on the gentler side and it is possible to have several females living together in the same tank.
Betas Fish have a total of seven fins. They have two pairs of paired fins. These are the pectoral and the ventral fins. The pectoral fins and the caudal fins are the Betas main source of navigation while the others provide stability. More Beta Fish Anatomy
Beta Fish are also known as ‘anabantoids'. Anabantoids have an auxiliary breathing apparatus called a labyrinth organ. This labyrinth organ allows Beta Fish to breathe air from the surface as opposed to underwater. This Beta Fish adaptation likely occurred as a result of living in the waters of South Eastern Asia which are frequently very low in oxygen content.
The best temperature for your beta fish is between 74-80 F. You should ensure the temperature never gets below 70F. Betas Are tropical fish and cannot survive anything but tropical water temperatures.
